Location. Romania is situated in Southeastern Europe.


Area : 237500 km.
Romania is a Carpathian and Danube county, with output in the Black Sea, with a varied relief and harmoniously distributed (plains, 36% hills and plateaus, 33% mountains, 31%).


Neighbours: - Romania is located near the north by Hungary and Ukraine, east by Moldova, Ukraine and the Black Sea, south to Bulgaria and Serbia to the west by Hungary.
On Romanian territory is most of the Danube Delta, declared a biosphere reserve (1990).


Climate is temperate - moderate continental with four seasons and some external influences (oceanic, Baltic, to Pontic) in lower regions. Annual average temperatures exceed 11 degrees Celsius in the south and descend below 0 degrees on the highest peaks.


Waters - With the exception of several small rivers of Dobrogea, Romania all waters belong to the Danube basin, whose main tributaries are Somes, Mures, Cris (through Tisza), Jiul, Olt, Arges, Ialomita , Siret and Prut. In Romania there are about 3,500 lakes, but their area does not exceed, in general, 1 km square (the largest lake is Razim, 415 km).

Tourist Attractions

In Romania there are many reserves and national parks (among them, Retezat National Park, founded in 1935), scientific reserves, natural monuments and 1990 Biosphere Reserve Danube Delta - mentioned above - which includes Delta, Razim lagoon complex and a lower section of the course of the Danube between Isaccea and Tulcea.
The most important mountains are the Carpathians, divided into three main groups: Eastern Carpathians (between the northern border of the country and the Prahova Valley, the maximum altitude of 2303 m - Vf.Pietrosul in Rodnei Mountains ) Meridional Carpathians (from Prahova Valley corridor and Timis - Cerna - Bistra - Strei with maximum altitude of 2544 m - Vf.Moldoveanu in Fagaras Mountains) and the Western Carpathians (between the Danube Valley to the south and north in Somes, with maximum height of 1848 m - Vf.Curcubata).

Population Romania is 22,430,457 inhabitants (according to the National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies, January 2001), distributed as follows: Romanian 89.4%, Hungarians (including Szeklers ), 7.1%, Roma 1.7%, other minorities, 1.8%. In terms of religion to which they belong, population structure is the following: Orthodox: 86.8%, Roman Catholic: 5.0%, Reformed: 3.5%, Greek Catholic: 1.0%, evangelist: 0 3%, Unitarians: 0.3% Other religions: 3.1%.

Romania is parliamentary republic under the Constitution from 8 December 1991 and headed by a president elected every four years. Legislative power is exercised by the Parliament (composed of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate) and executive power by the Government, appointed by parliament after legislative elections.
